Balwyn North Residence, Melbourne

Located in the leafy context of Balwyn North, the Bulleen Road residence is a masterclass in monolithic modernism. The design is defined by its strong horizontal datum and deep-set concrete apertures, which serve a dual purpose: providing a sense of permanent sanctuary while naturally regulating solar gain.

The facade is a rhythmic dialogue between mass and void. Heavy, chamfered concrete frames provide a robust shell, while the delicate verticality of the metal battening offers a soft, permeable layer for privacy. This interplay of light and shadow ensures the building’s character evolves throughout the day, transforming from a solid, sculptural form in the midday sun to a glowing, lantern-like structure at dusk.
